About Brainwave Discovery Limited

Brainwave Discovery Limited (BWD) provides services that enable Central Nervous System (CNS) drug research and development divisions of pharmaceutical companies to make faster, cheaper and better informed decisions earlier in the drug discovery pathway.

BWD is based on science from the University of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow. Development work was supported by a Scottish Enterprise Proof of Concept Award in 2005. BWD was formed in 2008, is a Limited company registered in Scotland. In 2009 BWD was reviewed by Scottish Enterprise and identified as a company with significant growth potential and an account manager was appointed to link us into the business development community.

Senior management:

Dr. R. Wayne Davies: Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Davies has a unique combination of international level scientific achievement with extensive business experience. He has six years of direct experience as Chief Executive Officer of two biotechnology companies, Neuropa Ltd. (a spin-out company of the University of Glasgow) and UmanGenomics AB of Umeå, Sweden. In these roles he had hands-on experience of biotechnology company management, Board membership, multi-round fundraising from venture capital and local Angel sources and interaction with major pharmaceutical companies. Previously, he was Vice-President for Science of Canada’s then flagship biotechnology company, Allelix Biopharmaceuticals, where he managed a staff of 70 scientists and played a leading role in establishing co-development work with pharmaceutical companies. Wayne is also an expert in genetics, molecular biology and neuroscience, with many publications in major scientific journals. He has been Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Glasgow since 1989, and led the team which started the commercial development of the science underlying BrainWave. He brings mammalian molecular neuroscience expertise and relevant commercial experience to the company.

Dr. J. Douglas Armstrong: Chief Scientific and Operating Officer

Dr. Armstrong is an expert in Drosophila genetics and molecular biology, computing and informatics and is active in a number of business networks in the pharmaceutical sector. Douglas was part of the academic team that first developed the BrainWave assay, and has since published important work in Drosophila behaviour genetics and nervous system molecular network analysis. He provides core bioinformatics, synthetic biology, Drosophila neurogenetics and behaviour expertise to the company. He is also a Reader at the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and Assistant Professor (Adjunct) of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Rice University.
